Channels and Docs

Channels and docs are the 2 main items you will use to setup your workspace.

What are channels, what are docs

Channels are the top level section of your workspace.
They help you divide your whole team knowledge, so that each user only see by default the sections most relevant to them.

Every page of content in Slite is called a doc. Channels also have their docs, and every doc can contain subdocs.

Channels let you organize your work into meaningful categories.

For your team, it might work best to create channels for different departments; for example, "Marketing" or "Customer Support".

Channels also let you set up space for special projects, regular meetings, and any other category of docs that need a home.

If you find that a doc needs to be a channel instead, you can change it by dragging that document to the channel level within the sidebar. You will then receive the following message that you can either cancel or confirm.

Locked with Key Privacy of channels

By default, all new channels will be be accessible by all teammates, and all docs under will follow the permissions of their parent.
Our philosophy is to unlock access to the maximum of knowledge to your teammates by default.

But of course you can change this and set an entire channel to be private, by setting "Everyone in {your workspace}" to "No access".
Open channels are great for internal handbooks, and projects.
Private channels are great for one-on-ones, executive teams, HR topics and so on.
You can set refined permissions at every level of your tree. See  🛂Cascading permissions  for more details on this.

What are "My channels"

By default, you can see all the parts of your workspace you have access to. As we support organisation with many thousands users, this can easily get overwhelming.

This is why you can set your list of key channels by clicking on "Add to My channels" in the three-dot menu. Your channel will be listed under the "My channels" section in your sidebar, right above your other channels.
The rest of your channels will remain accessible, but not shown by default. This way, you will only see by default activity relevant to you Index Pointing at the Viewer

Oh, and activities in these channels and in  Favorite docs   will also appear first in your  Catch up  section. Handy.

Why are some docs bold in the sidebar?

Light Bulb Bolded channels and docs mean there's been activity you haven't viewed yet.
