Channels and Docs

Defining channels and docs

Channels are the top-level sections of your workspace. You can think of them as folders. They allow you to divide and organize your team knowledge.
Every page of content in Slite is called a doc, including channels. Channels have docs below them, which can also contain subdocs.
The content hierarchy in Slite is as follows: Channels > Docs > Subdocs.

Organizing your team knowledge into categories

For your team, it might work best to create a channel for each department; for example, "Marketing" or "Customer Support".
Channels also let you set up space for special projects, regular meetings, and any other category of docs that need a home.
If you find that a doc needs to be a channel instead, you can convert it by dragging it to the channel level within the sidebar.

Doc Permissions

When you create a new channel you can set its visibility to Open or Private.
  • Open channels are great for internal handbooks and projects.
  • Private channels are great for one-on-ones, executive teams, or HR topics.
An open channel will be accessible by all teammates and all docs under it will follow the permissions of their parent.
Our philosophy is to unlock access to the maximum of knowledge to your teammates by default.
But of course you can change this and set an entire channel to be private by setting Everyone at... to No access in its Share menu in the top right.
You can set refined permissions at every level of your tree. See  Cascading Permissions  for more details on this.

Pinned Channels vs. More Channels...

By default you will see all the channels you have access to in the sidebar.
To narrow down your focus to the channels you need to access on a daily or weekly basis, you can  pin channels.  Pinned channels will be listed in the upper part of the sidebar for easy access, under Channels .
All the other channels you have access to will be listed under More Channels.
You can click any section to collapse it:
Activities in pinned channels and  Favorite Docs   will also appear first in your Updates section.

Red Question MarkFAQ

Why are some docs bold in the sidebar?

If a doc appears as bold in the sidebar, it means there's new activity in it that you haven't viewed yet.

Why are some doc titles faded out in the sidebar?

If a doc title is faded out in the sidebar, it means that it is inactive. A doc is considered inactive if:
  • it has around 70 days of inactivity, meaning it didn't receive any edits, comments, or hasn’t been mentioned in other docs
  • it hasn't been marked as verified
  • no doc below it is marked as verified
Learn more about doc verification  here .
You can choose to fade out inactive docs or not by toggling on or off Fade out inactive docs when hovering over Channels in the sidebar.

Why are some docs crossed out in the sidebar?

If a doc is crossed out in the sidebar, it means that it has been archived. Learn more about archived docs  here .
